Working with No 10 and ONS data scientists: data science for public policy by Dr Federico Botta

In this talk, I will present my experience of working with data scientists in 10 Downing Street and the Office for National Statistics.

Event details

I will discuss how data science can be used for policy making, what opportunities and challenges it offers, and how to use it to best engage with policy makers across a range of government departments. In the first part of the talk, I will discuss some general lessons I learnt along the way, from how to co-design a project with policy makers, to communicating and disseminating your results. Then, in the second part, I will present two different projects I have worked on: the first project is a case study on how to package data and code to enable reproducible research in the public sector; the second project is rooted in the UK Levelling Up agenda and aims to fill a gap in data on the cost of public transport in the UK, which is crucial in understanding how people can access jobs, opportunities and services across different areas of the UK.

Speaker: Dr Federico Botta, Lecturer in Data Science, Computer Science at University of Exeter
